Raleigh Birth Photography – By now, you’ve probably seen a dozen hospital bag checklists online — and yes, you’ll want those basics like toiletries, snacks, and comfy clothes. But after photographing dozens of births, I’ve learned that some of the most helpful (and comforting) items don’t make it onto the average list. Let’s fix that.
1. A Long Phone Charger
Hospital outlets aren’t always within reach of the bed, and labor is not the time to be fumbling for a dying phone. A 6–10 ft charger gives you flexibility to stay connected without moving around.
2. A Soft, Neutral Swaddle for Photos
Hospitals provide baby blankets, but bringing your own soft, neutral swaddle is perfect for those first photos — especially if you’re planning a Fresh 48 session. Choose one that feels cozy and timeless.
3. Lip Balm and a Small Handheld Fan
Labor can dry you out and heat you up quickly. A cooling fan and a good lip balm make a surprisingly big difference when things get intense.
4. An Extra Pillow with a Non-White Pillowcase
Hospital pillows are usually thin and all white — not great for comfort or photos. Bring a soft pillow from home with a colored or patterned case so it doesn’t get mixed up with the hospital’s.
5. A Printed Birth Plan and a Pen
Even if you’ve discussed your birth preferences, having a printed copy to hand to nurses can help everyone stay on the same page. A pen is handy for jotting notes, baby stats, or sweet things your partner says in the moment.
Bonus tip: If you’re planning on birth photography in Raleigh, Greensboro, or Fayetteville, let your care team know in advance. Most hospitals are very accommodating once they understand your photographer is part of your birth plan.
